Unable to Fulfill Prescribing Request

Unable to Fulfill Prescribing Request

There may be times when you receive requests from other providers to prescribe repeat medication to your patients.

Often these are appropriate and you are able to fulfill them as part of your core duty to provider ongoing treatment to your patients.

However, there will be times when you feel unable to take over prescribing at the request of another provider.

Please find a template letter to use in these situations.

We will be providing more guidance to support practice and please also utilise the PID process when the request was in breach of the Standard Hospital Contract.

The letter gives a number of reasons why the request can be pushed back including

  • Item is Black or Red or off formulary
  • The practice prescribers are not confident or competent to prescribe
  • It is a drug or condition you are not familiar with
  • You are not assured of the safety of the provider organisation
  • The item needed to be initiated, titrated and stabilised by the specialist before transfer
  • Not enough information was provided
  • You could not tell if adequate assessment or counselling had been provided/carried out
  • Shared care agreement details were not included
  • The request did not include details of the named registered health care professional making the request
