The BMA is the main representative organisation for doctors in the UK, and most doctors are full members. The General Practice Committee (GPC) is a “craft committee” of the BMA which represents and promotes the interests of GPs. The GPC is unique, amongst craft committees, however, because it strives to represent all GPs, and not solely those GPs who are BMA members. Furthermore, the uniqueness extends to the funding of the GPC: whilst other craft committees are funded through BMA subscriptions, the GPC is only partly funded in this way; it also receives significant funding from LMCs and the voluntary levy which GPs pay. The GPC may negotiate with the government directly, on behalf of GMS GPs, because GPs are independent practitioners, as opposed to employees of the NHS as all other doctors in the NHS are. Because GPs’ independence has served them well in the past, it is vital to ensure the strength of the GPC and the unity of LMCs across the country, as the success of the GMS contract negotiations illustrates this.

The GPC produces large quantities of very useful and important guidance notes on all areas which concern or affect GPs, and Norfolk LMC frequently refers to them on behalf of constituent GPs. However, these guidance notes are only accessible on-line to BMA members who can enter a password to enter the main BMA site. Norfolk GPs who are LMC members but not BMA members may contact the Office and we can supply a copy of what they need.
